    I didn't qualify as a YT historian for this because I was born in 1943, long after Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain covered the groundwork. I guess we had to wait for Ike so the Yanks could claim they won the war for us.

    Probably, Westmoreland’s and the administration’s biggest error was underestimating the communist infiltration of all levels of the South Vietnamese government and the effectiveness of guerrilla warfare at the hamlet, village, and Province level. Also, the flow of arms from China and Russia, and the vast jungle environment made it a logistical nightmare for even the best of generals. It was a proxy war between the super powers. I was there from 1967-68 with the USMC.

    I thoroughly enjoy watching, listening to or reading everything to do with the Great War and the ONE THING which truly pisses me off is that every single person who speaks on or writes about the Great War seemingly purposefully neglects speaking or writing about US financial backing of the Entente as well as what became the naval blockade by England of Germany making it a militaristic and economic necessity for Germany to do many of the things which many people characterize as making them the bad guys in the war. It's pure bullshit

    Too bad there was no Q & A afterwards. Besides being a demogogue, Hitler also made the mistake of surrounding himself with Diehard Nazis. Hitler proved to be an extreme risk taker who never seemed to have a fallback plan in case his initial plan failed. How could he have left over 3million german soldiers to try to survive in the Siberian winter without adequate clothing or provisions? The majority of the Nazi military ground forces were lost in that battle, and for no great strategic reason. The germans had destroyed an entire swath of the Russian country in their fight to take Moscow. There was no enemy behind them that would have stopped a controlled retreat to western Europe where theycould retreat and prepare to go back in the Spring to finish the job. Also, western Europe had been completely neutralized by the end of 1939. There was no risk of the English attacking Germany in the short term. England had been isolated and were on their own, and all of Churchill's pleading to Roosevelt had fallen on deaf ears since FDR was very reluctant 5o lose his voter base by commiting to another european war without being directly threatened Perhaps the bigger reason that Hitlerfailed was because he had been so successful early on in his march into the rest of Europe without facing any real military pushback that he undesetimated the remaining other countries and their militaries abilities to fight back effectively andr willingness to fight to the death ifnecessary. These remainibg countrieshad already observed Hitlers ruthlessness and deceipt - just by signing a peade accord with Chamberlain, and a pact with Stalin, both of which he quickly disgarded. Anotyer note: I watched the film Anthropoid last week, and the depiction of the german soldiers in this film as simply dumb thugs who wereconstantly having commands yelled at them, and ran blindly and obediently forward without question, is such a typical false stereotype as well. Besidesbeing well trained and well equiped, a big advantage tbe germans had was their ruthlessness towards the enemy. Having to worry about takibg prisoners, or what to do with civiluans seemed like a non important issue. Just kill them. So why go to such trouble to collect and house millions of jews , gays and commun8sts whe they could simply have been executed on the spot? There was too much contradiction in Hitler's decision on how to fight, where to fight, and who to fight. Once the enemy was given time to mobilize, it became more difficult for Hitler to finish off another coubtry in just a few days or weeks, unlesshe committed all of his forces to finish the job. Instead Hitler could not organize his forces efficiently- by 1941 he was already on to the next battle somewhere else without finishing the obes hehad started. There bever seemed to be a long term plan, just a long term ideology for the 3 reich to last a thousand years, but no road map to get there.

    Interesting take on the ideological view of war: the best generals (for the dictator) are the ones barely capable but completely loyal. Meritorious guys can coup the nation, men who lose can be shot for failure. Thus the SS can be set up to rival the Wehrmacht, and the Luftwaffe Hermann Goring division and the Fallschirmjaeger divisions could be rivals of both. Increasing internal tension, they simultaneously increased loyalty/dependency to the central leader. Kinda what's happening in Ukraine and the private military companies/national militias. Lots of parallels between Putin and Hitler.

    Just a little info on Andrew Roberts, Baron Roberts of Belgravia, the speaker: "Journalist Johann Hari has stated that Roberts' writings defended acts such as the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the Second Boer War concentration camps for Afrikaners during the Second Boer War, and mass internment in Northern Ireland (Operation Demetrius). Hari also wrote that Roberts made a speech at the expatriate South African Springbok Club, which flies the apartheid-era flag of South Africa and calls for "the re-establishment of civilised [i.e. white] rule throughout the African continent". Roberts claims that he did not realise the Springbok Club was racist when he took on the speaking engagement, despite the apartheid era flag, and the fact that the event was a commemoration of the 36th anniversary of UDI."

    If I were to take a test, in principle, I could answer the questions strategically - either by answering questions in a certain order or in a certain way. But I would not be "at war" with the test. Sun Tzu says "supreme excellence" not "supreme excellence at warfare." Therefore, it's a composition fallacy to assume that because either non-violent winning or strategy are at play that what is at play is warfare. Further, to attribute violence to the whole of the civil right movement because of the violence of a minority of a minority when many were engaging non-violently is a cherry-picking fallacy.

    You can see him sweating bullets towards the end there, making sure he gets all the details right when talking about the Jewish plight and applauding a form of their own racial supremacy when talking about all the Nobel prizes they won. A bit ironic, isn’t it? The notion that Hitler and the Third Reich lost the war purely because of ideology is absurd, especially when you could easily make the inverse argument about the Soviets winning the war precisely because they were extremely ideological. After all, Stalin’s infamous purges and human sacrifices were made under the guise of furthering the Bolshevik cause and getting rid of the reactionary, anti-revolutionary elements. The Americans were equally as ideological insofar as they were guided by protecting monopolist, big capital above all else. A number of hugely important details were left out in favor of presenting a fantastical and idealistic version of events here. The bombing of Dresden and murder of hundred of thousands of German women and children come to mind. Also the fact that Germany and her leadership had attempted countless times to settle for diplomacy with regard to the Western powers. These nations later neglected agreements and all teamed up to defeat the powerhouse that Germany had become all on its own. If anything, this was a testament to the strength that sheer ideology had afforded the Third Reich. At the end of the day, I believe this historian’s ultimate claim is misleading. After all, we are all guided by ideology to an extent. In his case, the gentleman is guided by a certain “anti-Nazi” ideology.

      Stalin should have lost due to it's ideology. During the first weeks of Operation Barbarossa, mostly due to Stalin policies, the red army completely collapsed. Many soviets refused to fight for Stalin and saw Germans are liberators. But when Russians realized that Germans were not here to just destroy USSR, but to colonize it, to enslave and then eradicate their people, they were forced to fight. They were put against a wall, they had no choice. USSR didn't won thanks to their ideology, they won because they had no choice but to win and they had the support of USA/UK. USA did had the right ideology to win. Freedom and Patriotism to motivate people to fight, Democracy and Liberalism to let people making choices not based on the best national or economical outcome instead of political outcome like in Germany. The bombing of German cities were not to make senseless murders, but to win a war. The allies did tried to not hit Germans civilians when they could. Even the infamous bombing of Dresden was not to target civilians as many people claim, but because Germans started to use it as their main logistic hub for the eastern front, slowing down USSR advance. There was no peace possible with the Third Reich, same way there was no peace with ISIS or Al Qaida.

    German navy was going to sink British ships no matter what - why did Hitler declare war on America? One leading theory is that he wanted to whow fascist unity with Japan and trigger a Manchuria offensive to strain Russia on a two front war - the war state between Germany/America was of no matter for that conversation due to logistical realties and they knew that (it was a goal to spur that attack forever). An interesting part is it ensured America would have an army on the continent as a contingency for a communist counter push, which was a very real prophecy at this point as Moscow was not taken (even rhe most enthusiastic OHK generals felt that was the one and only chance for victory and if they failed, a years long meat grinder like ww1 would emerge, which is what happened). Food for thought.

    This clip more than 10 years old. By now we know through reports from the Barbarossa campaign, that Halder and other generals put way too much blame on Hitler and too much praise on themselves. Especially Halder is considered by now an uninspiring and uncreative chief of Staff, while Hitler always had open ears for creative ideas like the Ardennes attack suggested by Manstein and initially rejected by Halder. Hitler was an aggressive against the odds risk taker and that led to the initial surprise success combined with the new Blitzkrieg tactics. Especially the plan to send the main German forces towards Moscow is heavily criticized by now, a plan that Halder insisted on, dismissing all other more creative ideas presented to him by his subordinates (like going more the resources in the south).

    Germany could have easily kept territory that it annexed prior to its attack on Poland. It's also plausible that it could have kept its part of Poland too, since the USSR also took part in that invasion. Had Hitler just stopped short of invading France, and left Britain alone, the Reich likely would have survived. Pearl Harbor pulled the U.S. into the war, but there was a strong feeling in the U.S. up to that point of avoiding any involvement in another European war. It's conceivable that the U.S. would have waged war against Japan without any significant involvement in the European theater of operations, especially if Hitler had restrained himself. It's unlikely that France and England, and especially the USA, would have waged war on Germany just to reverse those annexed countries and Poland. Making all the difference: Pearl Harbor was well after Hitler conquered France and Germany was attacking both Britain and Russia. Although it was not yet public knowledge, it was also known by this time what the Nazis were doing in their carrying out of the Holocaust, so there again was an imperative that Hitler must be stopped. So it was easy for FDR and Churchill to arrive at the priority of defeating Germany first, and then Japan. From a military perspective, Hitler sealed the fate of Germany when he invaded the USSR. That essentially consumed the greatest and most powerful elements of the Wehrmacht. An interesting 'what if' is how the war would have played out if Hitler had NOT invaded the USSR and had all those forces available to counter the Normandy invasion.

    • @mrsupremegascon
      @mrsupremegascon 8 дней назад

      What if Hitler had not invaded USSR ? Stalin, after having all the time and all the Western Russian facilities intact, would have finished a build a massively powerful Red Army, then cut the Germans of oil and food, either waiting for them to starve to death or them launching a desperate Barbarossa with even less fuel against much more powerful Red Army than in 1940. Stalin would never had let a massive Germany at his border, especially while it was at war with UK and could easily be blockaded.
